Anyone who has ever taken apart a New Departure coaster brake hub will recognize these parts. The New Departure Model M is their most common coaster brake hub, and the one commonly found on vintage Schwinn cruisers up to the early 1950’s. They are an effective, if not rather complicated and important bicycle component.
New Departures utilize seventeen alternating bonze discs compacting together and rely on one delicate little part, called the spring clip. These rare and simple little clips eventually go bad. If your New Departure hub no longer stops how it should, more then likely it is the fault of one of these little spring clips going bad.
I just found a whole box of NOS spring clips. Available at $15 apiece.
